The City of Chicago has a long history of being one of the leading environmentally-friendly cities in the U.S., if not the world. From the Chicago Center for Green Technology to the city’s Cool Roof Grant Program and the Chicago Trees Initiative, progress is abundant and residents are getting involved. As Mayor Daley himself has said, "I'm proud of the example that Chicago has set in environmental leadership and that is being replicated by cities here and around the world. I believe our efforts demonstrate that embracing an environmentally friendly way of managing government can protect not only the environment, but our taxpayers as well. Chicago is recognized around the world as a leader in protecting our environment. I’m proud that we acted many years ago, in areas that many cities are just beginning to appreciate today."
One such impressive program is Mayor Daley's Spring Clean & Green Volunteer Clean-up program. For the past two decades, Chicagoans have teamed up with community action groups and the City of Chicago to help beautify their local neighborhoods by cleaning up and recycling accumulated litter & trash citywide.
"The City of Chicago provides the brooms, rakes, shovels and bags needed to clean and green our neighborhoods," said Mayor Richard M. Daley, "But it's our volunteers throughout the city that provide the energy and inspiration for this effort."
On Saturday, April 25th, Mayor Daley was on hand at 47th and Forrestville in the Grand Boulevard area to help kick-off this year's Clean & Green effort along with 3rd Ward Alderman Pat Dowell, Streets & Sanitation Commissioner Michael J. Picardi and over 45 volunteers from the Forrestville Block Club.
They were part of a citywide effort that included participation from more than 10,500 residents from more than 450 groups.
"This process doesn't just help clean our neighborhoods for the day, but it builds partnerships that help keep our neighborhoods clean for many years to come," noted Commissioner Picardi. Cleaner neighborhoods and teamwork between the City and residents helps display unity and pride in the local community.
While residents can work directly with the City of Chicago during Spring Clean & Green to make a difference in their neighborhoods, they can also call 3-1-1 at all other times to achieve the same thing by requesting a City service.
Aquafina is extremely happy to have provided water to many volunteers during this annual event as well as a large amount of clear-view bags to make it easy for residents to collect large amounts of recycled materials.
