Earth Day 2009 Activities

A strong tide of volunteerism and environmental stewardship was alive and well this past Earth Day 2009. Aquafina participated with a number of Earth Day commemorations and clean-up activities across the country, and we were very excited to provide water and recycling materials for all community action volunteers at the events featured below

Earth Day, Syracuse, NY

According to Kevin Rich, local organizer –

“The Earth Day clean-up event was a huge success! I got to tell you, it is amazing what a group of people can do when they all chip in and work together. The site we cleaned up was Lower Onondaga Park, a clean up site given to us by the city of Syracuse prior to the upcoming Mountain Goat 5k Run taking place soon. At 10am, over fifty volunteers showed up at the park to begin the clean up. We all got together in groups of fours and picked different areas of the park to clean up with one another. The amount of trash we found was unbelievable! 3 hours and 40 bags of trash later, the park was sparkling clean and ready to be on display for the big race”.

Mechanicsburg Earth Day Festival, PA

Located just outside of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Mechanicsburg hosted the Mechanicsburg’s Earth Day Festival whose mission is to enrich the quality of life in our community while providing a new, fun and meaningful experience surrounding global and local environmental initiatives.

Aquafina was pleased to provide water for volunteers, and our recycling collection bins and Green Team staff to insure that all suitable beverage containers were collected and recycled.

Great America Clean-Up, Frederick County, VA

Bassam G. Atallah headed up a first-time Earth Day group of Litter-Thon volunteers from Shenandoah University's School of Pharmacy. The Class of 2012 joined over 400 other volunteers during Litter-Thon 2009, a new record for Frederick County Clean Sweep, the county's all-volunteer litter initiative. The students also adopted a stretch of roadway as part of Virginia Adopt-a-Highway!

Bronx Zoo Run for the Wild, New York City

Aquafina joined with the Bronx Zoo and the Wildlife Conservation Society in supporting the inaugural Run for the Wild 5k Run/Walk that took place on the Zoo’s grounds. Over 2,000 runners and walkers turned out for this event. Aquafina provided water for all participants, as well a recycling collection effort at the finish line.

Great America Clean-Up, Fayetteville NC

From Bobby Hurst, Chairman, Fayetteville Beautiful –

A total of 153 groups representing 1,414 citizens participated in our annual Earth Day litter pickup. In less than 3 hours, 1,151 orange bags were filled for a total of 30,340 pounds of trash. Citizens, young and old, walked along 257 miles of roadside this Saturday morning, committed to make a beautiful difference in our community.

Several Fayetteville/Cumberland County Parks and Recreation trucks drove along various routes distributing Aquafina water for the volunteers.  Half a pallet of bottled water was placed in five large ice chests for distribution to the nearly 600 volunteers who were present at the 9 a.m. rally location.  The following link is a clip of the Fayetteville Beautiful Rally:
