Thanks to the increased spirit of volunteerism, Philadelphia’s parks are more than 3,500 hours greener.

A few cloudy skies weren’t enough to keep the volunteers away from this annual event! On May 16th, over 1,500 community action volunteers from corporations, schools and community members spent their Saturday morning weeding, planting & painting at over 40 parks and recreation centers across the city as part of the 14th annual Fairmount Park Day.

From Wingohocking Park in the north to Morris Park in the west, volunteers battled invasive weeds and vines, painted benches, planted trees, and picked up trash, beautifying the public spaces local residents all know and love so well.

A heartfelt thank you has gone out to the volunteers who enabled the Philadelphia Cares organization to focus on the tremendous asset and resource that all residents share in Fairmount Park and have helped to expand community support for the parks. Not only did they accomplish much needed restoration, but they showed that Philadelphia really does care about its green space.
