The Shop Creek Trail Construction volunteer event is one of more than 20 exciting outdoor stewardship projects that Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) has planned for 2009.

This fun-filled day was be organized completely by VOC’s high school youth volunteer group, Cairn. These young stewards have been working hard on stewardship challenges throughout the year and are ready to show their skills in volunteer leadership.

Cherry Creek State Park is located in Aurora, Colorado. The park surrounds an 880 surface acre reservoir and offers a natural prairie environment of gentle, rolling hills, and complete outdoor recreation facilities.

Volunteers spent a fun day repairing and restoring one of Cherry Creek State Park’s most popular walking trails, the Shop Creek Trail. The trail has suffered significant damage from frequent floods along Cherry Creek.  Hikers trying to avoid damaged sections of trail have created multiple trail corridors, braided walkways, and wide paths. To alleviate the damage and create a sustainable trail, volunteers will restore eroded areas with new soil, and repair and resurface sections of the trail with finely crushed rock.

This was a perfect opportunity for families, youth, and small community action groups to join together to make a difference.

Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) is a nonprofit organization committed to inspiring and creating lifelong environmental stewards through outdoor volunteer experiences. Since 1984, tens of thousands of citizens led by skilled volunteer leaders have helped protect, conserve, and sustain Colorado’s natural places through their work with VOC. Volunteers can join VOC outdoor projects throughout the year and help with stewardship efforts like building and restoring trails in wilderness areas, constructing paths in city parks, and restoring fragile riverside habitat.

Aquafina is a supporter of VOC and its outdoor stewardship mission and provided bottled water to hydrate volunteers at this event.
