The Turk’s Trail Construction volunteer event was one of more than 20 exciting outdoor stewardship projects that Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) has planned for 2009.
For this event, 150 volunteers came together to construct a trail near Colorado’s Breckenridge ski area. The trail will enhance skiing, mountain biking, and hiking opportunities nearby. This effort is the latest in a series of trail construction projects being done in partnership with the Town of Breckenridge that highlight local history, unforgettable scenery, and great recreational opportunities.
Volunteers restored and improved 0.5 miles of existing trail and construct 1 mile of new trail. This project included opportunities to learn basic trail construction, build rock walls, and install a new bridge. When complete, the trail will help protect the area’s abundant native plants and wildlife, and will highlight the historic Reiling Dredge, a fascinating part of Breckenridge’s gold mining history.
Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) is a nonprofit organization committed to inspiring and creating lifelong environmental stewards through outdoor volunteer experiences. Since 1984, tens of thousands of citizens led by skilled volunteer leaders have helped protect, conserve, and sustain Colorado’s natural places through their work with VOC. Volunteers can join VOC outdoor projects throughout the year and help with stewardship efforts like building and restoring trails in wilderness areas, constructing paths in city parks, and restoring fragile riverside habitat.
Aquafina is a proud supporter of VOC and its outdoor stewardship mission and provided bottled water to hydrate volunteers at this event.
